indiana_jane_: Awkward Conversations
Continued from here
"You explained yourself. There's no need to keep apologizing," Giles said, a bit more tersely then he'd intended.

"All right," Wesley frowned but didn't object. "Perhaps some tea would help you sleep?"
Thu, Feb. 9th, 2006 11:43 pm (UTC)
Giles snorted. "Yes, because tea cures all ills."
Thu, Feb. 9th, 2006 11:47 pm (UTC)
"Yes, well... " Wesley smiled half-heartedly, it didn't seem as if he were saying anything right at the moment.

"I seem to find myself in a rather poor mood," Giles said, releasing a heavy sigh and reaching up to rub at his face, as though he could somehow scrub the mood away if he did. "If you'd like some tea, then by all means, make some. It doesn't seem as if I'll be getting any sleep any time soon."

"No, it's all right." Wesley turned so that his back was to Giles, settling his head more comfortably on the pillow. Perhaps the best thing for him to do was leave Giles to his own thoughts for the night, for he didn't seem to be helping any. "I only suggested it because I thought it might help you sleep. If you don't think it will, there's no need."

Wesley jerked awake at the sound of Connor's cries. His eyes felt heavy, gritty with lack of sleep though he didn't hesitate to throw the covers off and stand. He looked back, absently checking on Giles surprised to find him looking more annoyed than sleepy. Obviously he still wasn't feeling quite himself, probably due to their late night as well.
"Sorry, love. I'll take care of him. Go back to sleep."

Sleep, he thought, did not seem to be on the agenda, but kept the comment to himself.
Giles rolled over and attempted to simultaneously block out Connor's incessant wailing and the fact that dawn had already graced the morning with her presence.

Wesley threw on a robe and hurried down the steps. "Shhh, love, it's all right. Wesley's here, Connor." He scooped Connor from the playpen and checked his diaper, obviously in need of a change he took Connor over to the couch and began talking softly to him and searching for the plastic keys that had fallen under the coffee table the night before. "Here you go, love." He smiled triumphantly when Connor gurgled and reached for the keys.
"Kee kee!" Connor mumbled, startling Wes.
starting to talk, aren't you love?" Wesley's heart turned over in his chest. "That's right. Keeeys." He emphasized the word as he wriggled the set in front of Connor's face. "Keeeeys."
"Kee kee!" Connor giggled and grabbed the keys from Wesley hand making him laugh.
"All right, close enough I suppose." He tickled Connor's stomach for a bit then reached for the diaper bag for a fresh set of clothes and nappies.

Even after the wailing had stopped Giles couldn't ignore the intrusive way the early morning sunlight was penetrating his eyelids. Resolving to invest in better black out curtains Giles swung his legs over the side of the bed and wondered if this wasn't a bit like how it felt to be the walking dead. Zombies, not vampires.
Putting two thoughts together felt as though it would take more effort then climbing Everest.
Coffee. He needed coffee.
Fri, Feb. 10th, 2006 12:41 am (UTC)
Wesley was mixing Connor's cereal when Giles entered the kitchen. He'd had a feeling that Giles wouldn't be able to fall back to sleep given how long it took in the first place and had already started a pot of coffee for him.
"No luck getting back to sleep, Rupert?" He asked softly as Giles reached for one of the mugs.
Fri, Feb. 10th, 2006 03:12 am (UTC)
With a grimace, Wesley wiped at the glob of cereal that landed on his shirt when Connor made a grab for the spoon. He looked up to find Giles scowling once again. "Perhaps you should stay home and try to get some rest, Rupert. Maybe you're coming down with something?" He suggested.
Fri, Feb. 10th, 2006 03:22 am (UTC)
"Or perhaps I got next to no sleep," Giles countered.
Fri, Feb. 10th, 2006 03:24 am (UTC)
"Yes, well, that's what I meant actually. Perhaps you had trouble sleeping because you're feeling ill?" Wesley explained.
It didn't seem as if Connor was going to eat anymore of the cereal so he settled for giving the boy his bottle and standing to get a wet cloth to clear up the mess.

Giles couldn't seem to quell the ridiculously immature urge to be completely contrary. "I couldn't sleep because I had too much on my mind and any time I did manage to shut my eyes Connor deemed it a good time to make his presence known. Loudly."

"Yes," Wesley said a bit tentatively. He still remembered his abysmal showing when he'd tried to train Buffy and Faith. "I've learned a few things here and there from Angel and Gunn. And I've always had a more than fair skill with the cross-bow and guns, though I've no intention of going that far with Dawn." He assured.
