margarks: Grief and Love and Moving On...

Continued from here.

Wesley's heart clenched at Giles' desperation, the pain in his voice. "You won't, love, you won't." Wesley kept repeating as he held Giles even tighter. "We don't forget the ones we love. You won't let yourself. I know you won't."

"Don't let me. Please, love, don't let me." Giles couldn't seem to get close enough to Wesley. His arms not tight enough around him. His body continued to tremble, so cold.

"I won't. You won't." Wesley reassured him. Not knowing what else to do, he took off his coat and draped it around Giles' shoulders before wrapping his arms around him once more. "Don't be afraid of that, Rupert. We won't let it happen."

He had buried his face against Wesley's neck, his tears were soaking into the collar of Wesley's shirt. This wasn't like him, to be so overwrought, to let his emotions, whatever they were, get the better of him, but Giles couldn't seem to make the tears stop, yet, at the same time, couldn't seem to let them go. He fought every one.

Giles felt a tentative smile of his own begin to turn up the corners of his mouth as Wesley spoke. The adamant way he's spoken, it was quite obvious how much Wesley wanted him to feel better.

"Thank you. Truly. For coming, for making it so I wouldn't have to be alone when I - I'm not even sure I would have come had you not been here." He'd needed someone's strength and thought he should have felt shame that he hadn't been strong enough to manage on his own, but, strangely, he didn't. "And for holding me while I, well... it's above and beyond really."

"I don't think so." Wesley said softly. "I know you'd be here for me if the situation were reversed." He cupped Giles' cheek and gave him a quick, hopefully reassuring kiss.

"I would, of course I would."

Giles glanced back at Buffy's headstone, the intense pain just the sight of it had caused was now nothing but a dull ache. His eyes flicked back to Wesley's, full of emotion for him.

"I know I just said it, but thank you, love. It means a very great deal to me that you were here, that I have someone who . . . who's here for me as you are."

The word tumbled out before Giles had truly realized he'd said it.

Wed, Nov. 2nd, 2005 02:50 pm (UTC)

Wesley's brow furrowed as he struggled to understand what Giles was asking. "What do you mean, love? Of course I'll stay. I wouldn't leave you alone at a time like this." He assured, squeezing Giles' hand as he turned into the apartment car park.

He hadn't meant to say it but now that he had... "That's not what I meant, Wes. I . . . I want you to stay, here, with me, when it's all said and done with Connor."

Giles' chest felt too tight for the second time that evening, but for entirely different reasons. His mouth spread into a wide grin. "Think you'll want to put up with me for years?"

Thu, Nov. 3rd, 2005 07:36 pm (UTC)

"I think I could be persuaded." Wesley teased, smiling back. He was glad to have distracted Giles from his grief for a bit.

"Do I have my work cut out for me then?" Giles said with mock seriousness.

Mon, Nov. 7th, 2005 05:14 am (UTC)

"If we're to do this it's... it will be your home too, so of course you can have guests and I'm sure Angel and I can be civil to one another. Besides, I'd very much like to meet Fred and Gunn."

Giles couldn't help but again feel a bit selfish. It was obvious Wesley was already thinking about what he was going to miss.

Mon, Nov. 7th, 2005 05:18 am (UTC)

"You'll like them, I'm sure. Though Gunn can be a bit... aggressive. Fred is brilliant, and I'd have to say one the nicest people I know." Wesley grinned at little at the thought of her. "She cares about every one and every thing. And you're right - Cordelia has changed a great deal. I doubt you'd recognize the woman she's become." Wesley said, fondness tinging his voice. "But of course, if you're able to come with me to pack my things... you'll meet them then, I'd imagine." Wesley took Giles' hand and held it in his lap between both of his.

Mon, Nov. 7th, 2005 05:26 am (UTC)

"I'm sorry," Giles said, realizing he hadn't answered Wesley's question, "I would be happy to help you, of course. It's... to think of you moving in with me it's... " Giles laughed, a happy sound, not quite able to put what he was feeling to words.
